Two Becomes One in a Korean War Zone

from Benjamin on 02/27/2026 07:14 AM

Trapper John and Hawkeye had wanted to get married, and they even had a date picked out and everything. Hawkeye even had bought them special wedding bands the last time he was on R and R. Everything was in place; all they had to do was wait for the army to crossed their T's and dotted their I's and give them their blessing to get married. As the days started to go by and the wedding date that Hawkeye and Trapper had picked was getting closer and closer, there still wasn't any word from the army. Finally, the day before their wedding, Hawkeye and Trapper got a letter, with a marriage license stating that they were allowed to get married. This overjoyed Hawkeye and Trapper, who were sleeping in different tents because of the wedding. So, the next day, the day of Trapper's and Hawkeye's wedding, everyone was extremely busy getting the mess tent ready for a wedding and the afterwards a wedding reception, which, thanks to one of the nurses and their connections, had some pretty good food and a pretty good wedding cake waiting for everyone after the wedding was over.

So, while the rest of the camp was decorating the mess tent, Hawkeye and Trapper were in separate tents getting ready for their special day. Hawkey knew he wanted to look his best for the man he was going to spend the rest of his life. So, while nobody was around, Hawkeye went and took a quick shower, making sure to wash every inch of his body so that there was not a speck of dirt on him. Once he was done showering, which didn't take him too long, since he knew that Trapper would probably want to take one too and they weren't allowed to see each other at the moment. So once Hawkeye got back to the tent he and Trapper shared, Hawkeye then got his shaving kit and began to shave and get all the unwanted facial hair off his face, even though he knew that Trapper did like a little stubble on his face. He would grow it back later but for now, again, he just wanted to look his absolute best for Trapper John McIntyre. Once Hawkeye was done shaving and loved the way he looked, it was finally time to get dressed and finish getting ready. As he was starting to get dressed, Hawkeye looked over at his alarm clock and noticed the time. He knew it was slowly getting closer to his wedding, not only by the time but by the butterflies that was also starting to gather in the pit of his stomach.

Across camp, in a tent that suddenly felt too quiet without Hawkeye in it, Trapper sat on the edge of his cot, staring down at the neatly folded clothes beside him.

For once, he wasn't joking. Wasn't deflecting. Wasn't leaning on charm to get through a moment.

He was nervous.

Trapper let out a slow breath, rubbing his hands together before running one through his hair. "You've faced worse than this," he muttered to himself. "War zones, impossible surgeries... one wedding shouldn't be what gets you."

But this wasn't just a wedding.

This was Hawkeye.

That thought alone made him smile—softly, almost helplessly.

He stood and moved toward the washbasin, splashing some cold water onto his face, letting it wake him fully. He'd already cleaned up earlier, but now he took his time, making sure everything was just right. He shaved carefully, slower than usual, wincing once when his hand slipped just a bit.

"Great," he muttered, dabbing at the tiny nick. "Real professional, McIntyre."

Still, when he looked at himself afterward, he nodded faintly. It would do.

Turning back to the cot, he picked up his clothes—simple, but the best he had. He brushed them off again even though they didn't need it, smoothing every line like it somehow mattered more today than any other day.

Because it did.

As he dressed, his movements slowed again, his thoughts catching up with him.

A life.

With Hawkeye.

In the middle of a war, in a place where tomorrow wasn't promised, they were choosing something steady. Something real. Something forever, even if forever looked different out here.

Trapper reached into his bag and pulled out a small object, holding it in his palm for a moment. His thumb brushed over it absentmindedly, his expression softening.

"I hope you're ready for this too, Hawk," he murmured quietly.

After a second, he tucked it safely away, close to his chest.

Then he straightened, rolling his shoulders back, as if bracing himself—not out of fear, but out of the weight of how much this meant.

There was a knock at the tent flap.

"Hey, Trapper!" came a familiar voice from outside. "You decent, or are we gonna scar ourselves for life?"

Trapper huffed out a quiet laugh, some of the tension easing.

"Give me a second!" he called back.

He took one last look around the tent, then at himself, then finally toward the flap.

A slow smile spread across his face—warm, certain.

"Alright," he said under his breath. "Let's go get married."

And with that, Trapper stepped out into the cold, ready to meet the man waiting at the end of the aisle.

Hawkeye had just finished dressing and was doing one more final inspection of himself. Hawkeye couldn't help but smile as he noticed how perfect he was for his beloved Trapper. And even though Hawkeye still had butterflies in his stomach, he knew that they would go away once he was standing next to Trapper, holding his hands as they looked deep into each other's eyes. Today was the beginning of what would be the rest of their lives together and even though Hawkeye had butterflies, and he knew that Trapper was also feeling just as nervous, it would all be worth it in the end. It was then that Hawkeye's father, Hawkeye Sr, came in with a pitcher of martinis, knowing that his son could use one or two before everything changes. Hawkeye just hoped that Trapper Sr. was with Trapper Jr right now, since Hawkeye knew Trapper Jr would be one big bundle of nerves. Anyway, Hawkeye was sitting in his temp tent, having a couple of drinks with his father and talking about the future and what him and Trapper had planned for their lives while they were waiting for the time that they were supposed to be at the mess tent for one of the first weddings that would be taking place in Korea. The only thing that both Hawkeye and his father were hoping for was for the North Koreans didn't decide to attack in the middle of this special and blessed event. Finally, after two drinks each and getting some well-needed advice from his father, Hawkeye was ready to make the commitment of a lifetime. They gave each other one last look and smile before Hawkeye's father opened the door of the tent, which Hawkeye walked out, followed by his father, who escorted his son to the mess tent, where everybody was waiting for them.

Meanwhile, back at the SWAMP, Trapper was just about to leave, when his father showed up, standing in front of him. Trapper Sr. knew it was just about time for Trapper Jr.'s wedding, though they still had a few minutes to speak. Trapper Sr. could see that before Trapper walked with his son to the mess tent for the event that would change his life. After a few minutes it was Trapper Sr, who put a gentle hand on Trapper John's shoulder and smiled. "Before I walk you to the mess tent and to the love of your life," Trapper Sr told his son. "I think you could use a drink or two before I take you to the love of your life," Trapper Sr. said smiled as he then put his arm around his side and took him back inside the SWAMP. Trapper John Sr. then went over and poured them each a martini and then took it over to his son. "Here, drink this," he told his son as Trapper John took the drink from his father's hand. Trapper Sr then sipped his martini and then sat the glass down as he began to fix the button's on his son's shirt. "I can see that you were nervous when you were getting dressed," Trapper Sr. said with a smile. "Sorry I wasn't here to help, I had something come up that couldn't wait," he added and then cleared his throat as he rebuttoned Trapper John's shirt while Trapper John threw back his drink. Trapper Sr just laughed and stopped what he was doing to get his son another drink. "Drink this one a little bit slower," he said as he went back to buttoning up his son's shirt. Once he was done with his shirt, Trapper Sr began to redo Trapper John's tie as he continued to speak to his son. "So, is there anything you want to ask me before you go from being a single man to a happily married man?" he asked his son.

Trapper let out a small breath he hadn't realized he was holding, rolling his shoulders slightly as his father fixed the tie around his neck. He looked down for a second, then back up with a crooked, nervous half-smile.

"Yeah," he said quietly, voice softer than usual. "Just one thing."

He paused, swallowing once, suddenly very aware of how real everything felt in that moment.

"Is it normal... to feel like you're about to walk into the best part of your life and still be terrified you're gonna mess it up?"

His eyes flicked toward the tent opening for a second, then back to his father.

"Because I don't want to mess this up," he added, more honest now. "Not him. Not us."
