Neither of them said anything for a few minutes as Frank looked around his son's office. Frank knew he would need to sit down soon but continued standing there in the doorway of Spencer's office, It was Spencer who finally broke the silence and began to speak again. And once Spencer was done speaking or at least pausing for a few minutes to move closer to him, Frank took the opportunity to speak to his son softly and yet still with a smile on his face. "Yes," Frank said. "Though I also tried to stab a couple of doctors due to lack of sleep is also part of why I'm here," Frank added as he paused to listen to Spencer once again speak. Once Spencer was done and the silence fell over them again, Spencer finally reached out and hugged Frank, even if it was awkward. After a while of embracing and Spencer whispered that he not only kept the last letter but all of the letters, which made Frank smiled softly as they embraced. After a few minutes, Frank finally pulled away from Spencer and looked deep into his eyes as he began to speak to him. "First of all, I kept all the ones you had written to me too. And I read them on a daily basis," he told Spencer and then went on. "And secondly, you feeling the way you do is okay, because I know all the crap you have been through, and I'm just here to make things right with you," he told his son as he cleared his throat. "Besides, there are some things that I do need to tell you," he added and then went on with his thoughts. "And I came prepared for any questions that you might have," Frank said as he took a couple of deep breaths as Frank felt a wave of dizziness coming over him. "Anyway, that brings me to why I'm actually here," Frank said and then went on. "I was hoping that I could take you to lunch and maybe we can talk about everything or at least start to talk about everything," Frank said as he quickly closed his eyes for a few minutes, though he never stopped talking to his son.
"But first, do you have a place where I could sit down and maybe get a glass or two of ice water?" Frank asked as he kept his eyes closed while slowly breathing. Spencer, who was now getting very worried and concerned for his father, helped him over to a chair and then got on his phone to his receptionist and told her to please get a pitcher of ice water and a glass and for her to hurry. Then Spencer turned back to his father, going over and sitting on the edge of his desk as his father was sitting in of the chairs that was in front of Spencer's desk. Frank finally opened his eyes only to see the look of concern and worry on his son's face. That was when he reached out and took Spencer's hand and with a smile on his face, began to speak again. "Don't worry, my son," Frank said softly and then went on. "I'm a doctor and I'm fine," he said with a smile. "Besides, this is just a little dizziness, it will pass," Frank said as Spencer's receptionist brought in the pitcher of ice water and a glass, to which Spencer took and poured his father some water. As Spencer dismissed the receptionist, Frank began to gently sip his water until finally, the dizziness passed and Frank was looking better. "Anyway, why don't you finish up your paperwork or whatever you were doing before I interrupted you," Frank started and then went on speaking to his son. "I'll just sit here and drink some water until you are done and then we can go for lunch and maybe doing some sightseeing a little bit before I go back to my hotel room for a nap," Frank told Spencer and then took a couple more drinks of water as he went onto finish up his thoughts. "Because I'm sure, once we are done talking through lunch and sightseeing, you'll need time to think and process everything," Frank added as he swished his ice and water around before drinking the rest of his water and then pouring him some more water.

After being allowed to go up to Spencer's office, Frank didn't move from where he was sitting for a long time. He knew that him and Spencer had some things to work out, which was probably what was causing the butterflies, but that didn't mean he loved his son any less. Finally, after taking a couple of deep breaths, Frank got up and finally went up to Spencer's office. Once Frank reached Spencer's office, he took another deep breath and walked in, meeting Spencer just inside the office. Frank just stood there for a few minutes, looking at his son, who was studying him to make sure he was real. It was then that Spencer broke the silence between them, leaving Frank to think about everything that Spencer was saying at the moment. Finally, Spencer paused long enough for Frank to get in a few thoughts of his own. "Of course I came," Frank told his son, wishing his voice was cracking like it was. He also forced a smile, though Frank knew deep down he could do better as he went on speaking to his son. "I know I probably should have written to let you know I was coming, but I wanted it to be a surprise. Besides, I really had no idea when I was actually going to get here," he told Spencer as it was his turn to pause to let Spencer take his turn at speaking. It was what he said next that almost broke Frank, especially when Spencer brought up the fact that they had stopped writing to each other, which like Spencer, he didn't know who stopped writing first or even why they stopped. All Frank knew was not only did it break his heart but he was really missing it too. Finally, after Spencer was completely done speaking, Frank cleared his throat and began to speak, knowing in the back of his mind that there were no words that he could say to make this moment less awkward. "I promised you that I would be back and here I am keeping that promise," Frank said with a nervous chuckle as he went on speaking. "I would have gotten here sooner, but you know the war. Once you think it's slowed down a bit, it comes back twice as hard," he added and chuckled again.
Frank looked away from his son for a few minutes to collect his thoughts. After a few minutes Frank turned back to Spencer and began to speak to him again, with a smile on his face, though it looked a little less forced this time. "I bet I do, and to tell you the truth," Frank said and then went on speaking. "I have been putting a lot of hours in with patching up surgeries and stuff like that," he confessed to his son. "Like I said, just when you think the war is slowing down, it turns around and comes back twice as hard," he added chuckling, though it sounded weak and tired. "But finally, the war slowed down enough that I was able to get away for a couple of weeks without it hurting the 4077th," he added as he paused once more. It was then that Spencer brought up the fact that they stopped writing to each other, though he didn't exactly know who stopped writing first, and to be honest himself, Frank didn't know exactly who stopped first or why they even stopped writing. As silence fell over the both of them for a few minutes, Frank couldn't help but think back when they were writing back and forth and the letters were flowing steadily like wine between the two of them. Those were some of the best times of Frank's life. Frank was about to say something when Spencer said that he kept Frank's last letter and how it really made him feel, which brought an actual and genuine smile to Frank's face. "I meant what I said in that last letter," he said. "I am and have always been proud of you. And I don't know exactly why we stopped writing, maybe it was the war or maybe it was other things, but what ever it was, it doesn't matter anymore," Frank told Spencer. "Because I miss it and I miss you," he told Spencer. "And the reason why I came now is because I started having some mental problems from all the surgeries that I was doing back-to-back. So, I thought what better way to relax than to spend some time with my son in Tokyo," Frank said with a smile on his face.

Frank had decided to take some RR time to himself. He had a rough and long 48 hours of surgery and pranks and he was about to lose his mind. So, Frank gathered the things he would need and soon was in Kempo on a flight to Tokyo. He knew his son was stationed there, working on some high-level stuff, so he thought that he might go and see his son, just to see how he was doing. He knew that Spencer had a high-pressure job, worse than his, so maybe this visit would help him distress. Frank began to smile at the thought of seeing his son again. The last time they saw each other, Spencer was a Senior in high school right before Frank got drafted. They wrote letters often, that's how Frank learned his son had not only graduated with honors, but he was accepted to the best Ivy League school, which he graduated with top honors and was on the dean list for the entire time he was in college.
It wasn't until after Spencer graduated college that the letters stopped coming, which made Frank sad for a while. But then one day, he got a letter from Spencer saying that he enlisted and was being sent to Tokyo for a very high-pressure job. Spencer also wrote that he didn't know when or if he would get to see Frank again, so Spencer wrote that he loved him with all his heart and that he was proud to be his son. Frank always kept that letter in his shirt pocket close to his heart. And now Frank was on his way to Tokyo, and for the first time, he was actually excited to go. Frank couldn't help but think about all the things he and his son could do when he got there. Plus, Frank knew that he had to explain what happened between him and Spencer's mother, though he wasn't sure how Spencer was going to take it. |
